Nonet
(“A nonet has nine lines. The first line has nine syllables, the second line eight syllables, the third line seven syllables, etc… until line nine finishes with one syllable. It can be on any subject and rhyming is optional.”) (source)
Ode to Shakespeare
There was once a man who composed plays
Of love, revenge, and bygone days
Some people say he was great
Others say he’s fake
But who doesn’t
know the name
of fair
Will.
We read his plays and think of his words
Of Othello’s blind jealousy
And Romeo’s young lover
Puck’s mischievous ways
And Hamlet’s revenge
Macbeth’s blood lust
Lear’s madness
Each one
Rhymes.
Perhaps we miss that which is obscure
Below the words of iambic
Pentameter rhythms and
Wisdom forgotten and
Perception replaced
By quick pleasures
Of movies,
phones, and
games.
But I will recall Shakespeare’s greatness
When the world has forgotten him
I will read those worn pages
And think of his deep themes
His great characters
Picturesque scenes
Tears and smiles
I will
Cite.
(I got into this poem a little bit too much…sorry. I just love Shakespeare so much!)
Brilliant ode! In fact, I just uploaded a ‘Nonet’ of my own onto my blog. It’s linked below. I’d love it if you would have a look over it and leave me some tips on how to improve. I’m sure I could learn a lot from you. I hope you like it!

I have experimented with the Ode before too:

Just some advice. I understand you want more views/comments on your blog. However, if you send the same message multiple times to the same person…they might get a bit annoyed. Like I told you before, I am no poet and I cannot help you with your poetry, especially because you’re pushing me to do it. I’m honestly not even sure you read my poem, as you told me the exact same compliment for my last two poems you commented on. I apologize if I sound a bit mean. I’m just being honest. To everyone who comments on any of my posts, I always check out their blogs to see if I’m interested in following them. However, I do not appreciate having links put in my comments, as if my blog is somehow an advertisement for your blog. If you had not pushed these links on me, I might have followed your blog and enjoyed your poems (I enjoyed the one I read by you). However, I will not be checking you out. Also, your behavior goes very near to spam. If you do comment again, please do not include links to advertise your blog or I will delete them. Thank you and good luck with your blog.

I’m so sorry about that! I was only trying to get the word out about my poems, because I really want the advice of the brilliant poets on WordPress just like you. Not many people do check out your own poems if you comment on theirs, so I didn’t know how else to let people know about my poems. I won’t comment on yours anymore 🙂.

Could you suggest other ways to get the word out there about my poems?

I find that simply posting frequently, commenting and other people’s blogs, and starting dialogues on comments on your own blog will help. I haven’t done any advertising and I already have over two hundred followers (small in the grand scheme of things, though). Just never give up! 🙂
