NaPoWriMo 2018: Day 16

Nonet

(“A nonet has nine lines. The first line has nine syllables, the second line eight syllables, the third line seven syllables, etc… until line nine finishes with one syllable. It can be on any subject and rhyming is optional.”) (source)

Ode to Shakespeare

There was once a man who composed plays
Of love, revenge, and bygone days
Some people say he was great
Others say he’s fake
But who doesn’t
know the name
of fair
Will.

We read his plays and think of his words
Of Othello’s blind jealousy
And Romeo’s young lover
Puck’s mischievous ways
And Hamlet’s revenge
Macbeth’s blood lust
Lear’s madness
Each one
Rhymes.

Perhaps we miss that which is obscure
Below the words of iambic
Pentameter rhythms and
Wisdom forgotten and
Perception replaced
By quick pleasures
Of movies,
phones, and
games.

But I will recall Shakespeare’s greatness
When the world has forgotten him
I will read those worn pages
And think of his deep themes
His great characters
Picturesque scenes
Tears and smiles
I will
Cite.

(I got into this poem a little bit too much…sorry. I just love Shakespeare so much!)
