One good thing about NaNoWriMo is, because I am writing so many words a day, I don’t have enough time to go back and critique my earlier chapters. I’m the type of writer who is highly critical of everything I write, so often times I get bogged down in rewriting the first few chapters and take forever to finish the book. But this month, I haven’t done more than glance back at previous scenes.
Saying that, I am keeping a quick cheat-sheet for everything I’m including in my story. I have the names of all the characters I mention and a one sentence description of who they are and I have a separate list for important names (such as towns, places, and concepts). This way, I don’t have to go back to a previous chapter if I forget any names for things or people. Really useful.
But anyway, NaNoWriMo forces you to always look forward, which is really a good thing, in my opinion, when it comes to writing a first draft.
