Daily Thoughts #44

Yesterday was the Grammy Awards (a little overrated, but still interesting). I did not watch it. In light of this (the Grammy Awards, not the fact that I did not watch it), I thought I would take a moment to talk about one weird thing I do with connecting music to my writing. I’ve been playing piano since I was six and have been writing almost as long. So it would make sense that the two would go hand-in-hand in my life.

You know how in movies often times certain characters have theme songs. Well, I do something similar for my characters. I will find a song that I believe expresses the motivation, character, or voice of a certain character and make it their theme song. If I am writing a scene in which they are featured, often times I will listen to the song a couple times before to get in the mood (or in my case play it on the piano).

It is a strange technique I use, but something you might try if you are having difficulty writing a certain character or getting their voice right. Or it might not even be a certain character. It may be a song that you believe sums up the message of your entire story.

What are some of your favorite songs that inspire your writing?
