You may have noticed that there are ads now on my blog, probably to the right of this sentence if you are reading it on a laptop. This was a surprise to me. For those who don’t know, WordPress has this thing called WordAds that you can get on your website. For more expensive website plans (a.k.a., not what I can afford), you can get them automatically on your blog no matter how many views you get per month.
However, for the cheapest non-free plan, you have to apply and only after you get past a certain threshold of views (I was told in the thousands, though the number seems vague) can you get ads placed on your blog (a bit like how YouTube works, if you are familiar with it).
How it began…
I applied for WordAds probably about three years ago, a few months after I started my blog. I figured even if I only made a few dollars a month, it would be nice to make some money for something I put so much time into. Again and again, however, I was told that my blog did not get enough view to be elligiable.
Honestly, since I’ve gone back to college and focused on my future more, I’ve kind of forgotten about the whole ads thing. I’ve just focused on writing this blog for fun, sharing my thoughts on books and just playing around with ideas.
Imagine my surprise then when, exactly a week ago today, I received on email from WordPress saying my blog had qualified for WordAds. I was kind of in shock, not sure I believed it. But when I checked on my blog, sure enough, it was true.
What happens now?
This really won’t change anything for all my wonderful readers. I’m still posting the same amount, and content won’t change.
I also made sure to add ads only where it doesn’t seem really invasive. So you’ll see two on the sidebar of every post and one at the end of each post. I figure this keeps the ads to a minimum and doesn’t lower the user experience. I hate the news websites which run ads in the middle of the post. Like, excuse me, I’m reading that and you’re distracting me.
Although I don’t have control over what ads any of you are seeing, according to WordPress they have ways to kind of tailor the ads to your interests (not creepy at all). All the ads should be child friendly.
This feels like a random thing to share, but I’m really excited about it. I’m not expecting to make a lot of money, and currently my goal is to earn $100 a year to pay for the license for this blog, which I pay yearly (technically, the cost is around $40, but you don’t get paid until your income reaches $100). I’ll be rich! Kidding.
In other news, since I’m extremely busy with college right now (this semester is really time-consuming), I’m thinking of doing more chill, discussion posts. I’ve done some of these in the past, but they are pretty rare on my blog. But I figure it’s an easy way to keep giving you content, while not being too overwhelmed running this blog while I’m in school.
Let me know if any of the ads annoy you, or you see inappropriate ads. Also, if you have experience with WordAds, any advice tips for me? Are you also trying to add ads on your blog? Let me know your thoughts down in the comments, follow my blog for more musings and, as always,
Best wishes in your life full of adventure,

How to put ads on my blog?

You apply to WordAds and they will tell you when you qualify for ads. However, you have to buy your own website license, and it looks like your website is the free version (it has wordpress in the url). You can’t get ads on that.

That’s awesome! I’m so happy for you! Although ads do get annoying, I’m respect that they are part of how people make money! xoxo

Yeah, I agree that they can be annoying, especially in the middle of a post. I hope by having ones only at the end and sidebar that it will be less annoying.

Congrats! I didn’t realize it was so hard to get approved for ads. Good for you then. 🙂 I always find them annoying, but I do see why you’d do it. So you know, there are a couple right in the middle of this post, & then one at the end of the post, & one in the sidebar. So it looks like you will have the interrupt kind…

Really? I set it to not be in the middle…I’ll have to go back into settings and see if I can figure out how to take away the ads. I do know on phone there can be in the middle (and there’s nothing I can do about it), but on laptop they shouldn’t be. And I agree that a lot of ads can be annoying 🙂 But I guess I understand why anyone who spends hours a week working on a blog would want to get even a little monetary gain.

Yeah, absolutely! Do your thing! I never knew it took so much to even get approved. I can see why you’d do it. Plus, it’s your blog. You should do whatever you want. 🙂
