Day 6: A book that makes you sad
I tend to stay away from books that make me really sad, but the one which comes to my mind first is…
Othello by William Shakespeare
I have never liked this play, even though I can understand it and appreciate it. But it’s so frustrating and sad to read, when the tragedy could have easily been avoided and no one had to die.
As Luxun, a famous Chinese writer, said, tragdy is something that destroys beautiful things in front of you.
The book makes me sad is The Great Gatsby. I still remember the sadness sweeping over me. From my point of view, Gatsby is the only one that has a strong believe and sticks to his dream. He is a lonely, pure idealist through and through , but the world ruins both his dream and himself. I don’t know how to express my feelings about him. The book gives me a feeling of nihility and also a solemn and stirring power to struggle in this world.

I agree! The Great Gatsby is such a sad book. It’s one of the reasons I don’t like it, because I hate sad endings!

Somehow I enjoy tragdy, but I admit that sometimes reading books with sad endings feels like tormenting myself because they make me immersed in the book, which is different from reading something hilarious or relaxing——I’m just like a bystander!
I find that as I grow up, I like happy endings and light reading more and more——because life is already difficult😂

Exactly! I can appreciate tragedies, like Shakespeare’s tragedies, but I prefer happier books because life is depressing already! I agree completely with you!
