(One week left!!!! I’m happy I did this challenge, but boy will I be thrilled when I’m done with it! I enjoy poetry, but it’s certainly not my preferred forte.)
Fable
(“A fable is a poetic story composed in verse or prose with a moral summed up at the end. Usually using animals as characters to teach a valuable lesson.”) (source)
If I Was a Butterfly
If I was a butterfly
How happy I would be
I would fly between the trees
And laugh with the bees
I’d emerge from my cocoon
The most beautiful creature I’d be
I’d flap my wings and think
How lucky I was to be so pretty
All the humans below would admire
My bright colors and delicate frame
But I’d be content to just flutter
And sip nectar from sweet flowers.
But, oh, would my life really be easy?
A child touches my wing and I die
The weather chills and I die
I lay my eggs and I die
Perhaps I wouldn’t want to be a butterfly
I only live two weeks before I die
And then all the beauty is wasted…
And yet I was happy in that moment.
Do we realize how short this life is?
How we waste it fluttering around
When we might be choosing happiness
And those two weeks will be pure bliss
Happiness is a choice
A butterfly does not care that its life
Could be over in a fateful second
It simply lives.
A very thoughtful piece! This may actually my favorite piece since I’ve started reading your poetry this month. Keep it up.
