Top Strangest Looking Animals

Yes, I’m weird, and yes, I love looking surreal but real animals on Pinterest. Since I couldn’t think of anything else to write about today, I thought I’d share with you my favorite weird looking animals. You might ask why I would feature this post on a writing/reading blog, but honestly a lot of these animals are great inspiration for fictional fantasy creatures!

Be prepared for cuteness overload!

Tardigrade

Also known as water bears or moss piglets, these eight-legged water dwellers live everywhere (tops of mountains to the bottom of oceans). They are only about 0.02 inches long (a.k.a. 0.5 mm). Tiny, freaky, but so cute!

Blue Glaucus

Blue Glaucus

Also known as blue angel or blue dragon, this little sea slug can be found throughout the oceans. It’s about 1.2 inches long (3 cm.) and one of the most beautiful creatures I have ever seen. Imagine one fifty feet long. That would be a real dragon!

Fennec Fox

Fennec Foxes

Found in the Sahara and Arabian Desert in Northern Africa, these nocturnal foxes look so unique with their pure black eyes (to see at night) and their massive ears. If these weren’t wild animals, I would totally want one as a pet!

Nyala

There are a lot of antelope/deer type creatures that could have made my list (including saiga antelope and the pronghorn antelope), but this one stood out to me the most, both because of the white striping on its face and back, and orange legs. Found in Southern Africa, it grows a little under six feet tall. Interestingly enough, the picture I showed is of the male; the female is almost entirely orange with no horns. Not as cool, but still pretty.

Southern Crowned Pigeon

Sourthern Crowned Pigeons

My family can attest to the fact that I love pigeons (my sister frequently jokes that I am one). So it would make sense that I would feature one on my list. This 28-inch-long (70 cm.) beauty is native to New Guinea. Both sexes have the same bright red breast and blue delicate crest. They are just so beautiful!

Japanese Spider Crabs

Japanese Spider Crab

This is probably the creepiest one on my list. Growing up to 18 ft. tall (5.5 meters), this is the largest arthropod in the world, found off the coast of Japan. It takes King Crab to a whole new level!

Honestly, I only scratched the surface of how many incredible creatures can be found at all corners of the earth! With creatures like these, one cannot wonder how fantasy writers can create strange creatures with reality being stranger than fiction!

What are some weird creatures that you love? Let me know down in the comments, follow my blog for more madness, and, as always,

Best wishes in your life full of adventure,

Madame Writer

  1. I really enjoyed this post! It was refreshing and I got to see animals I don’t usually see. My favorite is the fennec fox too. Some of my favorite odd creatures are the axolotl and this North American salamander (gyrinophilius porphyriticus) I did a presentation once ❤️
