Daily Thought #47

Has anyone else realized how creepy so many classic children songs are? I was recently listening to “Tip-Toe Thru’ The Tulips With Me” by Tiny Tim and it got me searching a lot of nursery rhymes I grew up listening to. Seriously, some of them have pretty macabre lyrics for supposedly happy kids’ songs! We all know about “Three Blind Mice” where the farmer’s wife cuts off their tails with a carving knife.

But there’s a lot more. It’s Raining! It’s Poring! The old man is snoring! He went to bed and he bumped his head and he didn’t get up in the morning! Or Ring around the Rosy / A pocket of posies / Ashes, Ashes / We all fall down was actually referencing the Bubonic Plague. Or London Bridge (I mean, is anyone concerned that the London bridge is falling down?).

What are some of your favorite kids songs that, now that you are older, sound really creepy?
